Lindeloff and Cuse told Variety they couldn't finish all 8 episodes, but could probably do 5 and have them ready to air in succession.
Also, they think they'd just compress those 8 episodes into 5 and finish the arc they originally had planned.
And then next year, add 3 more episodes to complete the contract.
So that's good news.

Yay! I heard a possible of 6 more episodes. Regardless... I hope this mess is tied up soon.
