Season 4, Episode 8: "Meet Kevin Johnson"

Holy exposition Batman!

The Lost creators decided to give us 85% plot and 15% mystery this week and all I can say is, thank you, I was getting way too confused.

It certainly sucks that we have 4 weeks without Lost now though.

Before we get to the basics, lets start with that mystery.

Mr. Friendly tells post island, pre freighter Michael that the island won't let him kill himself. How is this possible? Well I don't know, but I'm pretty sure that's why Bearded future Jack wanted to not only throw himself off the bridge, but go back to the island. There is unfinished business.

Michael was also informed that Charles Widmore, NOT Ben, placed the fake plane in the ocean. That's the opposite story of the freighter captain. Who to believe? I don't know, as powerful as Ben is I think it's mighty fishy that they have all the paperwork and photos proving its a fake. Like, wouldn't that be a little more difficult to get...unless you did it yourself. I still say Ben did it.

Ok, back to Michael. Of course the real part of his flashback - what happened immedialy following season 2 and how he got away from the island - isn't what we saw. Instead he's off the island, living a sham life in New York and suicidal. Ben hires him to go on Widmore's boat to be a spy. Pretty straight forward stuff but still - a very important piece to the timeline puzzle and I'm glad to have it. I'm also glad to see a little bit more of the freighter life. These people are mucho importante.

As for the ending, why would Sayid turn Michael in? Michael definitely betrayed the Losties but he also told Sayid to not trust the captain. What's going to happen there? And the untimely deaths of both Carl and Rousseau was certainly shocking but they added nothing to the show, unlike Alex who looks fucking HOT when she's cleaned up.

The ending was kind of nice though, it's as if the writers are telling us, "Hey, we spent all of last season telling you about the Others. Don't forget them cause we have a new group of people. They're still around. They're still deadly and they have a fucking temple." Maybe that temple has something to do with our four toed statue?

Maybe we'll find out in four weeks. Then again, probably not.

Five more to go in 2008 before we take another loooooooong Summer, Fall and Winter off from Hawaii again.

Hmmm...

There's almost not much to discuss with this episode since it sides so heavily on answering questions. I mean, seriously, there's extremely little room for debate or speculation here.

Two points, though...

#1. The Island won't let Michael kill himself. This is the first confirmation in the real world of the island have supernatural powers.

#2. Ben ordering his daughter, Karl and Rousseau to seek refuge at a "temple" but having them ambushed. WTF?!

Solid cliffhanger for four weeks.

Sayid always gets hot when he thinks he's getting fucked with, but he'll come around just as we all will that Michael is making the ultimate sacrifice. He's still following Ben's orders, but Ben was smart enough to give him an offer he couldn't turn down: a chance to save the lives of everyone he hurt in the past. LOST hardly ever lets major characters die without being completely and utterly redeemed (see Rousseau's teary reconciliation with Alex last night-- could her story arc be any more complete?).

Great episode... and I can see now how we woulda definitely been pissed off if we had to wait 9 months after that ending.
